We also assessed their scientific thinking abilities. We attempted to measure differences in performance between university students who attended upper secondary school under the March 1999 science curriculum guidelines, and those who attended under the March 2009 guidelines. Using questionnaires to gauge students’ understanding of scientific and technological concepts, we found that students who studied under the 2009 guidelines outperformed those who studied under the older model. This may have been the result of an increase in diverse learning content in lower secondary school under the 2008 guidelines. Students also participated in a physics unit. When tested, students who studied under the 1999 guidelines demonstrated superior scientific thinking ability. The 2009 students demonstrated inferior performance in the physics unit regardless of the combination of physics classes they attended during upper secondary school. This is likely due to insufficient understanding of the physics content provided in upper secondary school under the 2009 curriculum. This study is relevant in determining which curriculum components encourage solid foundations in science, and which best prepare students for university-level science courses.",
