The process of building the mechanistic model which we are presently considering involves two stages: (a) fitting and (b) diagnostically checking the model adequacy. A useful family of mathematically based models is given by the logistic model. Marquardt\u0027s method is employed to calculate the least squares estimates. Of the four candidate models postulated, we would favour the simple logistic model in practice in our problem. The Box-Lucas design for the simple logistic model is independent of θ1 but depends on θ2 and θ3. Observations should be made at times when 26.0%, 74.0%, and 100% of the growth expected at the final observation have occured. Replication of the best design for p experiments is an optimal design for N experiments.
