<datacite:description xml:lang="en" descriptionType="Other">This is a part of the writer's prefatory trial as to what was the fundamental character of John Ruskin's line of thought on social reform; and how it had been constructed, developed, how it came to be frustrated, and finally faded into unattainable horizon. The popular theory of Social Relations in our country, or that of "Sozialpolitik," has been very eager, following the mode of Marx's "Das Kapital," on collecting English line of materials, while it has accomplished very few on speculating what may have been the central idea of English Social Reform, whereas theorists pursued ideas of German Kathedersozialisten with enthusiasm. Now, this bias must be revised. The writer thinks he may find the essence of British social reform ideas to be Utilitarianism, which, not only served as "Philosophical Radicalism" or Manchester School liberalism in the nineteenth century, but has been, and is still, alive in the British social policy that the Fabians once set to work. Carlyle and Ruskin are apparently the aliens from the above main trend. Then what would their social thoughts mean, and especially that of Ruskin, because the latter specifically tried not only continual attacks on Orthodox Political Economy but also constructing quite a new scheme of social reform against British modern pauperism and degraded labour. Critics seem frequently to be content with putting on him such names as Romantic Reactionist, Utopian, or the mid-Victorian Knight of La Mancha. But this attitude seems rather one-sided, though containing many truths. To most students' surprise, they may read into Ruskin's works to find the proposed scheme of his to be so concrete and practicable, though it was bound to be enforced "from above" by the authoritative, paternal, Capitalist State, that we should define the pattern of his main ideas of social reform to be that of the Socialist of the Chair; though he himself could not but be permeated, to considerable extent, with the Victorian "self-help" spirit, which was to lead him ...</datacite:description>
