内容記述 | Japanese students generally lack confidence in their ability to produce and comprehend spoken English. Comprehending and producing a spoken second language well is a multifaceted task that requires years of focus. One reason Japanese learners of English often lack confidence is the limited time allocated to practice and develop these skills in classrooms in which productive speaking and listening skills are not generally focused on nor evaluated in detail. This paper suggests that another reason for learners’ lack of confidence and development in this area is their lack of knowledge of the phrases, language, and strategies to overcome areas of weakness, misunderstanding, and communication breakdowns in spoken English. This entails a sound knowledge of and ability to use communication strategies, i.e., language that leads to successful comprehension and production, spoken input and output, of language beyond learners’ current levels. This paper describes university students’ written responses to a questionnaire designed to ascertain their degree of knowledge of this important but often neglected aspect of second language acquisition. | |||||||||||||
