Forty-two male Wistar rats of 5 weeks age were adapted voluntary climbing exercise for 4 weeks. At 9 weeks age, rats were divided into 5 groups. Four group of them were injected subcutaneously glucocorticoid (2 mg/kg). The other group was injected saline as a control (N). The N and one of the glucocorticoid-injected groups (GR) were sedentary, and the other groups were exercised (GC, GS, GCS) for 8 weeks. The GC and GCS groups were climbed, and the GS and GCS groups were forced swimming for an hour. The climbing groups were restricted sarcopenia and osteopenia by glucocorticoid-injected. The swimming groups were tended to inhibit loss of muscle and bone mass. However, swimming groups were decreased weight gain as compared with the other groups. In conclusion, we suggest that moderate resistance exercise would restrict sarcopenia and osteopenia by aging.
