内容記述 This is an extract from the writer's unpublished 'A Study of English Sound-changes'(chapter V, 4, c. ). The four principal peculiarities of Cockney pronunciation which were indicated by John Walker in his ‘Pronouncing Dictionary (4th ed. 1806) are: 1. [w] for [v], [v] for [w] (vine 'wine', weal 'veal'). 2. [h] misplaced: dropped and added (art 'heart', harm 'arm'). 3. [w]- for wh-(wet 'wheat'). 4.insertion of an unstressed vowel between-sf (suffix) and the s-plural ending (postes, mistes, etc.). 'Errors of Pronunciation and Improper Expressions' by Anonymous (1817) has also 'harbour' for arbour, 'viper' for wiper and 'persistes'. Yet, at any rate, the most popular novelist of the first-half of the century was Dickens, and the Cockney Pronunciation of the times may well be called Dickensian. "The recorded confusion between v and w, the classical and most systematic examples of which are furnished by Dickens……is not exemplified in the 'Arry pronunciation……in the seventies and eighties'' (Joseph Saxe: Bernard Shaw's Phonetics, p. 39.). In the same way the voicing and unvoicing of certain consonants are typical of early Cockney (enfy 'envy', sallit 'salad', wile 'while', vot 'what', etc.). [h] misplaced is so conspicuous a vulgarism, past and present, that it gave the dialect the name of 'Arry dialect. Such kinds of misplacement may also be recognized in dooty 'duty', dook 'duke', etc., and yarn 'earn', faviour 'favour', parient 'parent', etc. There is much confusion in the pronunciation of [iG ] and [in], as in writin 'writing', virging 'virgin', etc., and sometimes [iGk] is heard instead of [iG], as in everythink 'every ...
