To clarify the positive/negative emotions of family members who continue long-term care for a patient, we employed a semi-structured interview method with an interview guide to conduct a survey. The participants involved six family-caregivers of patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Three patients and three caregivers made decisions regarding the patient's use of a ventilator. The interview examined the following factors that may affect familycaregivers' continuance of providing nursing care: poor access to medical and social services, Tracheostomy Positive Pressure Ventilation (TPPV) fostering patient and family attachment and a sense of duty, the family fatigue buildup causing self-diffusion; nurse care for patients isolated from society; and enhancement of patient presence through caregiver affection. The survey results revealed that communication between the patient and the family during the patient's use of a ventilator was positively associated with continuation of nursing care by the family. When they received support, family caregivers continued to provide care while finding meaning in living with the patient. In the future, it will be necessary for healthcare professionals to provide sufficient assistance to help patients' family caregivers come to terms with and find the meaning of living with a patient under medical treatment after they are weaned from a
