Considering the eyewear industry in Japan as a case study, this study conducted two short case studies of a large-scale eyewear chain store and an independent eyewear store, after confirming the current state of the eyewear retail market. After analyzing both case studies, it became clear that while large-scale eyewear chain stores are expanding their business by making use of “retail technology,” independent eyewear stores are developing their business with “retail skills” as a competitive advantage, which can be said to be the craftsmanship of eyewear merchants. Retail skills, such as the craftsmanship of merchants, are theoretically suggestive of a new perspective on the existence of small and medium-sized retailers and retail competition theory.",
